Notes: A Reed community member reported repeated unwanted contact by another Reed community member and inquired into the No Contact Order process.

Location: Library

Notes: A CSO on patrol encountered new graffiti in a first floor stairwell of the Library. Building services has been contacted for removal of the graffiti.

Description: Vehicle Tow
Location: Grove Lot

Notes: Community Safety had a vehicle relocated that had been blocking an access path and handicap space loading zone in the Grove Lot. The vehicle had prior been cited with a 72 hour tow notice and had not yet been moved.

Description: Damage to Property
Location: Theatre Annex

Notes: A CSO on patrol at the Theatre Annex encountered the odor of gasoline, and upon further investigation discovered that a hole had been drilled in the fuel tank of a Reed van. The CSO contained the spill with chemical absorbent powder, and contacted the Environmental Health and Safety team for further inspection and clean-up.

Description: Graffiti, Damage to Property
Location: PAB

Notes: A CSO on patrol of the PAB observed that a section of the wire paneling of a security gate had been cut in a fashion that indicated the reason for doing so was to gain access to the secured area behind the gate. Upon further inspection of the area, the CSO encountered new graffiti painted on the exterior casing of the building’s air system. No further damage or suspicious findings were noted. Building services has been contacted for repairs to the gate and removal of the graffiti.

Description: Burglary
Location: Chittick residence hall

Notes: A CSO responded to a report of a stolen bicycle from Chittick residence hall. The CSO met with a student who reported that the missing bike had been secured to the stairwell railing inside the westmost entrance to the building. The CSO also observed that the exterior door frame of the nearby entrance appeared to have marks that were consistent with those that would be made with the use of a prying instrument.

Description: Noise Complaint
Location: Naito residence hall

Notes: CSOs responded to a noise complaint on the second floor of Naito residence hall. Upon arrival to the second floor common room, the CSOs encountered a group of approximately 20 students with music playing loudly. The CSOs requested the students turn the music down, and also observed multiple alcohol containers set on surfaces throughout the room. When the CSOs requested to see the ID cards of the students that were present, all of the students left the room without speaking to the CSOs. The CSOs collected and disposed of the unattended alcohol and returned to their patrol priorities.

Description: Fire
Location: Birchwood Apartments Parking Lot

Notes: CSOs responded to a report of a fire in a dumpster in the Birchwood Apartments parking lot. The CSOs met with the reporting party, a Reed student, who had observed the fire. The student had attempted to extinguish the fire with the fire extinguisher from the apartment complex, but the fire continued to burn. The CSOs used two additional fire extinguishers in an attempt to extinguish the fire, but it continued to smolder. Portland Fire and Rescue (PF&R) was called to extinguish the fire. PF&R arrived at 0344 and successfully extinguished the remainder of the fire. Two CSOs remained on the scene until approximately 0357 when the last of the smoke cleared. Building services has been contacted for replacement of the used extinguishers, and the broken safety glass for the fire extinguisher case at the Birchwood Apartments.

 

CS Survey Responses:

Every week Community Safety requests survey responses from those who've had interactions with a member of the Community Safety team. These responses are always collected anonymously with the option for the responder to leave contact information if they would like for a member of Community Safety management to contact them, and are used internally for departmental performance tracking. Community Safety has opted to publish these survey results for transparency and community accountability. *Names and pronouns mentioned in survey responses will be redacted to protect the privacy of individuals.

In addition to surveys sent directly to those who have interacted with Community Safety, the Reed community is always encouraged to independently complete the survey regarding Community Safety's performance.
