Case #: 220259
Date: 2022 08 01
Time: 0809
Description: Theft of Motor Vehicle/Clery Act Reportable Incident
Location: West Lot

Notes: CSOs responded to a report of a vehicle theft in progress in the West lot. Upon arrival, the CSOs patrolled the West Lot but did not encounter either the vehicle or the presumed subjects. One CSO continued with a vehicle patrol in hopes of sighting the vehicle, while the other CSO returned to the West lot to speak with the reporting party and other witnesses. The reporting party stated that they had seen four individuals and three vehicles near the vehicle, at which time one of the individuals entered the vehicle and drove away. One of the witnesses was able to provide the license plate number for one of the other three vehicles and Dispatch was able to trace that information to a registered owner. The vehicle owner had been nearby when the theft occurred and was also on the scene. They had already contacted Portland Police and were awaiting their arrival.

Description: Trespass
Location: Birchwood Apartments

Notes: A CSO responded to a report of an unauthorized individual in a Birchwood apartment. Upon arrival, the CSO performed a patrol of the area but did not encounter the described individual. The CSO then returned to the unit to meet with the reporting party, a Reed student. The student stated that they were in the process of moving their belongings into the unit, and when they entered they encountered an unknown individual lying on the sofa in the living room. The student stated that the individual then, “in a non-threatening manner,” got up off of the sofa and exited the apartment. After a search of the department, it was determined that the most likely point of entry had been the front window, which the student noted had been missing its security bollard. After determining that there appeared to be no damage or missing items from the apartment, the CSO then performed another thorough patrol of the area but did not encounter the individual.

Description: Burglary/Clery Act Reportable Incident
Location: Trillium

Notes: A CSO responded to a report of theft of personal property from a Trillium residence. The CSO met with the room resident who stated that they had been moving their belongings from Trillium to a different residence hall when they observed that several of their items were missing. The student also observed that it appeared that Reed facility services had cleaned the room so they raised the possibility that the items had been removed by a Reed employee. A cursory check with building services found it unlikely that a building services employee had removed the items. The student contacted Dispatch a couple of days later to relay that they had been contacted by building services and that the items had been removed by a building services employee and placed into lost and found, and that the missing items had been returned to the student.

Description: Theft - Other
Location: Trillium

Notes: A CSO responded to a report of theft from a Trillium resident. The CSO met with the student who reported that their manual wheelchair had been taken from outside the entrance to their room, where they had left it. The CSO asked the student if they required an immediate replacement of the wheelchair and the student stated that they did not. The CSO then patrolled the building and the building checked storage areas and did not encounter the wheelchair. The following day, another CSO on patrol encountered a wheelchair matching the description of the missing wheelchair outside of Foster/Scholz. Dispatch was able to contact the student, who verified that it was their wheelchair. The CSO returned the wheelchair to the student. 

 

CS Survey Responses:

Every week Community Safety requests survey responses from those who've had interactions with a member of the Community Safety team. These responses are always collected anonymously with the option for the responder to leave contact information if they would like for a member of Community Safety management to contact them, and are used internally for departmental performance tracking. Community Safety has opted to publish these survey results for transparency and community accountability. *Names mentioned in survey responses will be redacted to protect the privacy of individuals.

In addition to surveys sent directly to those who have interacted with Community Safety, the Reed community is always encouraged to independently complete the survey regarding Community Safety's performance.
