Reed Professor Earns Fulbright Scholar Award for 2023–24
Professor Ellen Millender received a grant to conduct research abroad.
Professor Ellen Millender was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award for the 2023–24 academic year. Millender is the Omar and Althea Hoskins professor of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Humanities at Reed, where she has taught since 2002. Her research focuses on investigations of Spartan austerity, leadership, literacy, kingship, military organization, gender norms, and emotional practices. She is currently completing a series of studies of the role that spectacle and performance play in fourth and fifth century accounts of Sparta.
Millender will be spending her Fulbright at Nottingham University’s Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies. She will work on completing a monograph, which is provisionally entitled The Strangest of the Greeks: The Spartans in the Athenian Imagination. The first section of the book explores the role that Athens’ developing democratic ideology and hegemonic rivalry with Sparta played in fifth century constructions of Sparta. The second section of the book considers the work that Sparta performs in fourth century Athenian works, including Xenophon’s Lacedaemoniōn Politeia, Plato’s Laws, and Aristotle’s Politics.
The Fulbright Awards are scholarships for American and British students or professionals who seek to complete a postgraduate degree, conduct research, or teach. Over the years, many Reed faculty have received awards to complete projects all around the world.
